A Letter From The Boss
Dear Sir/Madam
You may
be aware that at present the HSE guidelines in the current ‘Approved Code Of
Practice’ covers Lift Trucks. And nothing else. Therefore the training standards
required for mechanical equipment of this type are at the training providers
discretion.
Training providers discretion is just that.
i.e. the content of any training courses may be questioned in the event of an
accident. Or
“Is it relevant to the work situation?”. Liability is always with
the employer at the end of the day. Assuming that all training courses have
minimum relevancy to you is not safe. It’s too late after the incident to ask
“What about content!” Better to go with a recognised standard. I
am sure you will agree.
The two
well-known training schemes we operate within use contents which are programmed,
tried and tested. The instructors are monitored annually for their standard of
training by the relevant accrediting body.
Certificates
issued under the ITSSAR course reflect “attendance/safety awareness” and are
valid for 5 Years.
Certificates issued under the ALLMI training
scheme reflect “completion of course and associated practical and theoretical
achievement” and are added to a central register. They are also valid for 5
Years and are recognised by the HSE and referred to in approved codes of
practice as the standard a HSE inspector would expect from any relevant operator
training.
The question of what is an "Experienced Operator" also arises from time to time. We work on the following...
Harold Thomas (Boss)
Novice Operator
Candidate who has limited experience and during the course will have to gain sufficient competence to pass the assessment.Experienced Operator
Candidate who it is recommended has had at lease 15 hours of experience operating the lorry loader to initially developed some skill
